Starting Massage Business on a Shoestring

One of the reasons why becoming a massage therapist is so attractive is because you can really start a massage business on a shoestring budget and most massage therapists do just that.    Your basic costs are your office space, marketing, a website and massage oils/lotions assuming that you already have a massage table.

You can start even cheaper by setting yourself up doing outcall massage or starting a mobile/travel massage business.   You just need a reliable car and gas money.  Going into people’s homes or to hotels brings up a whole other set of issues but ones that you can be prepared for easily.

You also just need a basic business card and maybe a brochure which can be done really reasonably at places like vistaprint.com.

There are many different office situations that you can find that you don’t have to put any money into.  You can rent a room in a group practice that is already established.  You can also find a space to rent with a group of massage therapists that you gather together or with people you went to massage school with.

Starting a massage business doesn’t have to be a major investment.

You do need to be aware of your expenses and have enough money each month to cover them of course.   Many people will advise you to have 6 months to a year of savings in the bank or more to start your business.   It all really depends on how motivate you are to get clients and learn how to keep them coming back.  It all depends on how motivated you are to build a website that will get clients coming in consistently.  To do that I recommend that you use Site Build it! (SBI!) It isn’t just a website system – it teaches you most everything you need to know about getting clients from a website.

Action Steps:

  1. Find a reasonably priced office space to share and work out of or find people to share it with.
  2. Set up a website that gets you a steady flow of clients.
  3. Get business cards and a brochure.
  4. I am assuming you already have a massage table, lotion and supplies needed!  You don’t need much to start!
