Start Your Massage Business
Massage school teaches you how to do massage but doesn’t have enough time to really teach you how to start and run a successful massage business. Being successful in the massage profession requires that you study, read and learn as much as you can about business in general and massage businesses in particular.
Having a massage business is different than most regular businesses because the focus is on helping people. Many massage therapists come to the massage profession to get away from corporate positions that focus on the bottom line of making money. Massage businesses will combine the best of both worlds – being able to help others while making a living.
The first step is really taking the time to plan and create a vision for your massage business. Figuring out what your values are will help you in setting up your business structure and format. The business structure will be in the form of policies and procedures that will help guide you in creating relationships with your clients. Because the work we do is different than other businesses – working with people under stress, in a semi-state of undress, client vulnerability increases as well as other dynamics of the therapeutic relationship. Being able to understand and work with the therapeutic relationship while making money will bring up many challenges for most massage therapists.
